What is the Distance and Directions from Barton Hall?

Distance: Approx. 34 miles | Travel Time: 45–55 minutes

Boddington Meadow is a stunning, traditional wildflower reserve nestled on the border of the county, making it a wonderful destination for a scenic day trip from Barton Hall.

Head southwest on the A43 past Kettering and Northampton.

Merge onto the M1 South, then exit at Junction 16 (or take the A45/A361 west toward Daventry/Banbury).

Follow the A361 toward Byfield, then follow local signs west toward the village of Upper Boddington.

The meadow is located just outside the village, past the reservoir.

Note for Guests: There is no formal visitor car park at the reserve; please park safely and considerately along the roadside near the entrance gates.

What is the History of Boddington Meadow?

Boddington Meadow is a rare and precious fragment of England’s natural heritage. Unlike most surrounding agricultural land, this ancient meadow has never been ploughed. Because the soil has remained entirely undisturbed for centuries, it retains a rich, prehistoric biodiversity that has vanished from most of the British countryside.  

Managed for generations through traditional late-summer hay cutting and livestock grazing, the site has become an invaluable sanctuary for rare wildflowers, butterflies, and insects. Recognising its outstanding ecological importance, Boddington Meadow was designated as Northamptonshire’s official Coronation Meadow in 2013. 

Today, managed by the Wildlife Trust, it serves as a vital “donor site” – its seeds are carefully harvested to help restore and create new wildflower meadows across the region.
