What is the history of Ditchford Lakes and Meadows?

The unique landscape of Ditchford Lakes and Meadows is a spectacular example of industrial reclamation. Throughout the 20th century, this stretch of the Nene Valley was heavily quarried for gravel and sand to support local construction. When the industrial workings were eventually abandoned, the deep pits naturally filled with water, creating a vast network of open lakes, reedbeds, willow scrub, and wet meadows.

Recognising its immense environmental potential, the Wildlife Trust took over stewardship of the land. Today, it forms a vital pocket of the Upper Nene Valley Gravel Pits, a designated Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Ramsar wetland of international importance. The site serves as a globally recognised sanctuary for rare breeding and wintering waterfowl – including Cetti’s warblers, herons, and oystercatchers – as well as a thriving habitat for elusive local otters.
